Every solar company's website will tell you solar is a no-brainer. Every solar skeptic will tell you it never pays off. Both are wrong. The real answer depends on 5 numbers β€” and I'll show you exactly how to calculate them for your home.

The 5 Numbers That Determine Whether Solar is Worth It

  1. Your electricity rate (cents/kWh)
  2. Your annual electricity usage (kWh)
  3. Your local solar production (peak sun hours)
  4. System cost after incentives
  5. Your net metering policy

Let's work through each one.

#1: Your Electricity Rate

This is the most important variable. Check your last utility bill β€” look for "cents per kWh."

The Real Numbers: A Case Study

Let's model a Boston, MA homeowner:

  • Electricity rate: 22Β’/kWh
  • Annual usage: 10,000 kWh
  • Roof: South-facing, minimal shade
  • System size: 8 kW

Estimated production: 8,000W Γ— 4.2 peak hours Γ— 365 days = ~9,744 kWh/year

Annual savings: 9,744 kWh Γ— $0.22 = $2,143/year

System cost: $24,000 Federal 30% ITC: -$7,200 State incentives (MA): -$1,000 Net cost: $15,800

Payback period: $15,800 Γ· $2,143 = 7.4 years

25-year return: $2,143 Γ— 25 = $53,575 in savings β€” $15,800 cost = $37,775 net profit

When Solar is NOT Worth It

Let me be honest about the cases where solar doesn't make financial sense:

❌ If you rent your home. You don't own the roof. Leases exist but complicate selling.

❌ If your roof needs replacement in under 5 years. Remove solar, replace roof, reinstall solar = $3,000–$5,000 extra cost.

❌ If your utility has eliminated net metering. California's NEM 3.0 (2023) massively reduced export credits. Check your utility's current policy.

❌ If you have significant shading. Trees, chimneys, dormers β€” shading on even 10% of panels can reduce output by 40%+ without microinverters.

❌ If you're planning to move in under 5 years. You'll recoup installation costs in home value, but it's not guaranteed.

❌ If your rate is under 8Β’/kWh. Rural electric cooperatives, some Midwestern utilities β€” the economics just don't work.

⚠️ Warning:

Solar leases and PPAs are usually worse deals than ownership. You pay for electricity but don't own the system, get smaller (or no) tax benefits, and complicate home sales. If you can qualify for a solar loan or pay cash, own it outright.

What About the 30% Federal Tax Credit?

The Investment Tax Credit (ITC) gives you 30% of system cost as a tax credit (not deduction) through 2032.

Important: it's a credit, not a refund. If you owe $5,000 in federal taxes and your credit is $7,200, you use $5,000 this year and carry $2,200 to next year. You must have tax liability to use it.
